Gender Inequality in China
Through out China, it is traditional that they boy of they family will carry on the customs of the family.Where does this leave the girls? Girls are treated very differently than boys because in their perspectives boys become men which means that they will be able to work and provide for the family. In China they came up with the "One child per family" law to reduce the population of China. As seen in this picture, it is a picture of a baby boy with his mother. Having a baby boy was a good thing, but when families had girls sometimes they were looked down upon. In some cases husbands threaten their wives if they did not have the baby boy with banishment or things like that.
When the families do give birth to a baby girl, sometimes they are abandon because some believe that when they get older they just leave the family with out actually really supporting or providing like a boy could do. Families often have lower expectations of girls, compared to boys. Girls consequently receive fewer family resources, a situation that prevents them from reaching their full potential. As seen in this picture, there is a white blank where the child would be in the picture. They had blurred this out because they don't know which gender of a child they will be having and it could be possibly a outline of a girl they had before they abandoned her.
In this picture, it is showing us that men make more money than woman. This is relevant to gender inequality in China because they see as men the money makers and women as the people to take care of the house and not do a lot of work. In China men are able to find work easier than women because of their ability to work "harder" than women because of their body structure.Men are able to do more labor which means that the family would be able to make more money. This is another reason why the Chinese prefer male babies than females. As stated in the first picture, men are able to provide more and they stay with the family while the women are said to be leaving them with out providing or helping.
Even though girls and boys get the same amount of education level, when they go to work males get paid more because women are being discriminated upon. They say that women have to be more masculine in order to survive the work environment. Not only is this happening to work places, but it is also affecting the National People's Congress delegates. Only about 27 % of this group is women. This just further support that women are being treated unfairly in China. Women work the same as their male co-workers but they still get payed less than the males. There is still discrimination against women in China, there were millions of girls that died because of the unfair healthcare, neglected, difficult food access, and female infanticide.
To conclude, there is a major problem in China with gender inequality. It affects women of all ages over in that country. Due to the issues with population, they had to make the on child program. This then lead to families preferring boys because they are able to carry on the family name and help out. This leaves the rest of the girls to be abandon or adopted in another country. If some do make it past their childhood, they will still be facing issues with discrimination and the unfair pay in work. Women get payed less because they are seen as not hard workers like men. To summarize, gender inequality is still a big problem in China that is still trying to be resolved.
